Ready, set, GARDEN...and move
Let the gardening begin!
The last few years we have had pot gardens (no, not what you're thinking...rather, a garden in pots). Our herbs tend to do very well in pots, but we have yet to be successful with tomatoes in pots. As you recall last year's garden's crop was stolen by some pesky rats, so this year we are fighting back and moving our garden. Scott and our neighbor Bob built 2 large beds in the backyard, which we will fill with tomatoes, peppers, green beans, squash, carrots, beets, and melons. This year we are sharing the garden with our neighbors, which justifies the large size. We have been composting all year, so our soil is rich and nutritious. We are also growing all our plants from organic seeds, which Scott mail ordered from Johnny Seeds in Maine (which means we get to choose from a variety of tomatoes and veggies not usually available at gardening stores.
So here is our garden now, little seeds beginning to sprout. Soon they will be transplanted outside. I can't wait for the garden to start producing!
HAHAHA!
I started writing this post a few days ago, but now it seems our garden is a no go =(
We got the disappointing news Tuesday that our landlord is foreclosing on our townhouse, and although we love it, it is not a place we would like to purchase (and we can't afford a purchase right now either). So that means we are outta here! Sad sad sad...I will miss my huge pantry and wonderful neighbors. Now we are on the hunt for a place that will rival our current abode: kitchen storage, washer/dryer, yard...those are the biggies. Wish us luck!

Grilled Asparagus Bundles
I made these yummy asparagus bundles a few weeks back, when we thought spring had arrived, and we spruced up the BBQ after it's dormant winter. But now, looking out my window at the gray sky and pounding rain, it is as though winter has arrived yet again, and our BBQ is rendered useless until the sun returns. But those of you in sunnier parts of the country can make these spring treats with the delicious asparagus popping up at farmer's markets!
Grilled Asparagus Bundles
serves 4
1 bunch asparagus
1 lemon
1 bunch chives
olive oil
salt/pepper
Trim the asparagus, to trim the asparagus, simply snap each stalk and it will naturally break at the tender part. Toss the asparagus with a bit of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, bring a saute pan full of water to a simmer on the stove. Add the chives, and blanche in the simmering water for about 1 minute. Drain and rinse with cold water. This lets you bend and tie the chives without breaking them. If your lemon is large, you will need 4 thin slices, and if it is small, use 8 thin slices. Divide the asparagus into 4 bundles, and top each bundle with either 1 large lemon slice or 2 small slices. Tie each bundle with a few chives (1 chive is not strong enough, so group 3-4 together to tie). Cook on the BBQ until tender (or you can broil in the oven if it is raining out). Enjoy =)
