Returned!
As most of my readers know from a few months back, my bike got stolen off my front porch in the middle of the night. Scott's was taken too. The police officer almost laughed at us when we asked the chances of getting them back, but now we (or atleast Scott) is laughing at him....because he has his bike back! Scott got a call from an investigator in Huntington Beach, saying they think they have his bike. He went to check it out, and it was his (although the condition is not as he left it...the seat is all chewed up and there are 2 new locks wrapped around it). The suspect said he borrowed the bike from a friend, and now that Scott has claimed the bike, they can go after the "friend" and get him too. Who knows, maybe Scott just cracked a huge OC bike theft cell! So now that his bike is back, I only see it fair that he buys me a new one so we can ride again =)

So Scott registered his bike? Is that how they knew it was his? When a member of the Sacramento Bike Theft Cell cut the lock on our bikes, he/she ONLY stole my bike. Testament to who has better taste, isn't it?
I've been watching a lot of L&O lately (it's ALWAYS on!). Think they'll do an episode on bike theft in the OC?
our bikes were not registered, but we do have the serial numbers for both of them, and amazingly enough the thief did not scratch out the numbers on his bike (not a very smart thief, even I know you need to scratch out the serial #)
wow!! that's amazing!! i am so impressed he actually got it back. my friend elizabeth (here in chicago) had her purse stolen from her car. some good samaritan found it and returned it to a polic station. (it was a botkier) anyways, she went thru months of trying to get it back even though she had all the proof and reports that it was hers. finally at the beginning of this year, she tried again to get it back only to find out the cops had an auction or something and sold her purse. it honestly was the most ridiculous story i'd ever heard. dev, remember elizabeth had her purse stolen in aug - she told us about it at dinner - this is the same dang purse! boo, chicago cops! yay OC cops who are much smarter. and a bigger yay to dumb thieves who don't know to scratch out the seriel #. duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
please tell scott i'm very jealous. i keep looking at every beach cruiser that passes to see if it's my beautiful red one. no luck so far. i do wonder what i'd do if i found it. jump the person? knock them over? scream at them?
i almost screamed at someone who i thought was on my cruiser ... then i realized it wasn't mine. hee hee.
i'm excited for you but confused - in a fascinated way. do the cops go from bike to bike looking to see if they're stolen?
This was a major issue when I was in Santa Barbara! One of the common excuses I got when teaching at UCSB was "I couldn't make it to class; some idiot stole my beach cruiser" I'm really glad your bike got returned, Holly.
